Subfaculteit Literatuurwetenschap

Ter ere van het 100-jarige bestaan van het Italiaanse futurisme organiseert de K.U.Leuven samen met het Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) van Brussel een internationaal congres waarop alle geïnteresseerden zijn uitgenodigd.

Op deze tweedaagse zullen talrijke internationale gasten (verbonden aan universiteiten uit Italië, Polen, Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië, Nederland en België) spreken over het Europese futurisme in zijn meest diverse culturele vormen.

Onlangs verscheen nummer 3 van nY, het tijdschrift dat ontstond uit de fusie van yang en freespace Nieuwzuid.

De rubriek "De kwestie" handelt ditmaal over de eigenzinnige (Oost‑)Duitse schrijver Reinhard Jirgl. In een briefgesprek met samensteller Arne De Winde en Bart Philipsen reageert Jirgl onder meer op de huidige herdenkingscampagnes naar aanleiding van de val van de Berlijnse Muur: ‘Historische feiten worden als thema’s gecommercialiseerd, wat neerkomt op een symbolische begrafenis na het opstrijken van de winst.’ De Kwestie bevat ook een essay van Bart Philipsen en vertalingen van fragmenten uit Jirgls recente romans "Abtrünning" en "Die Stille" door resp. Iannis Goerlandt en Inge Arteel.

Naar aanleiding van de publicatie van Een hoopje vuil in de feestzaal. Facetten van het proza van Willem Elsschot (Academisch Literair 1) nodigen auteur Koen Reymenants, uitgeverij Garant en het Letterenhuis u van harte uit op de boekpresentatie.

Deze vindt plaats op vrijdag 27 november van 15 tot 17 uur in het Letterenhuis.

Van 15 t.em. 17 december organiseert de OE Literatuurwetenschap: Tekst en Interpretatie het internationale congres Tektonik der Systeme. Neulektüren von Oswald Spengler.

Deze tweetalige conferentie over de Duitse cultuur- en geschiedfilosoof Oswald Spengler (1880-1936) heeft als doel een internationaal platform te scheppen voor productieve interdisciplinaire gedachtewisselingen over (de actualiteitswaarde van) Spenglers werk. Met zijn specifieke insteek wil dit congres bijdragen tot een vernieuwende Spengler-lectuur die wars staat van recuperatie en veroordeling, en een adequate positionering van Spenglers werk in zowel historische als actuele discursieve netwerken.

The Centre for the History of Intercultural Relations (CHIR) of K.U.Leuven Campus Kortrijk organizes an international conference on ‘Migration and Intercultural Identities in Relation to Border Regions’ on 27-29 May 2010 in Kortrijk, Belgium. CHIR is an interdisciplinary research centre for the historical study of intercultural relations, dedicated to a combined scientific approach of (1) cultural history, (2) history of education and (3) historical and comparative literature.

Migration is a rich and controversial field, relevant for current political, sociological and media debates. In a globalized world, characterized by increasing cultural diversity and societal complexity, discussions about migration, integration, assimilation and (inter)cultural identity, call for a nuanced and in-depth discussion of the way in which  people with different cultural backgrounds (try to and have to) live together and shape their cultural self-understanding. A comprehensive and thorough insight in these matters asks for a study of their long term development, and thus for a multifaceted historical perspective. The acknowledgement of this necessity forms the starting point and scientific backbone of the conference.

Although the historical study of migration is not new, thus far most of the research that has been done has traditionally focused on the economic, sociological or structural dimensions of the migration process, while scant attention has been given to its cultural implications. This striking neglect obviously ignores many of the most crucial aspects of the experience of cultural transition, not in the least as seen from the perspective of the migrants themselves. Consequently, a rightful place for the cultural dimensions of the migration process and the way they relate to intercultural identity construction and its corresponding cultural expression and embedding, is called for.

Op 24 en 25 november 2009 organiseert de Centrale Ondersteuningscel voor Sociaal Vertalers en Tolken (COC) aan de Lessius Hogeschool een ‘Master Class Assessment of Public Service Translators and Interpreters’.

Doelstellingen van de tweedaagse conferentie zijn het vergelijken van de verschillende nationale assessmentprocedures voor sociaal vertalers en tolken en het evalueren van de procedures die COC hanteert bij de assessment van sociaal vertalers en tolken. Dat moet leiden tot kwalitatief betere assessmentprocedures voor sociaal vertalers en tolken.

In the context of a Criminal Justice programme of the Directorate-General Justice, Freedom, Security of the European Commission, the partners in the EULITA project (JLS/2007/JPEN/249) would like to invite you to the establishment of the international non-profit European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association.

This conference takes place at Lessius University College in Antwerp, from 26 to 28 November 2009.

About the Conference

Within Translation Studies as a discipline there is a growing awareness of differences in perspective stemming from the varying cultural backgrounds of both the scholars and the practitioners involved, some considering former approaches to translation as being (too) Euro-centric and as such failing to take other cultural sensitivities and views on language etc. into consideration. These differences have a considerable impact on how translation is perceived and what its role is considered to be in society and culture. Consequently, this has an impact on how scholars conceptualize and theorize translation both as an activity and as an area of study.

Aan de hand van analyses van een aantal relevante, hedendaagse voorbeelden biedt Culturele studies. Theorie in de praktijk een overzicht van de geschiedenis, de belangrijkste stromingen en de sleutelbegrippen van de interdisciplinaire studie naar cultuur in de breedste zin van het woord. Van de omgang met populaire cultuur, postkoloniale kritiek en mediastudies of de aandacht voor etniciteit: dit handboek laat zien dat culturele studies een zeer betrokken en productieve manier van vragen stellen is die voortdurend aandacht heeft voor de wereld waarvan zij onmiskenbaar deel uitmaakt. Het maakt duidelijk dat culturele studies in de eerste plaats een praktijk is: een constante dialoog tussen de brede maatschappelijke context, het onderzoek en al die uiteenlopende onderwerpen die samen ‘cultuur' vormen. Culturele studies. Theorie in de praktijk behandelt de grenzeloze verscheidenheid van hedendaagse cultuur. Van nationale identiteit tot het homohuwelijk, van film, literatuur of de graphic novel tot games en Google, en van tatoeages tot cameratoezicht. Dit boek belicht zodoende de productieve spanning tussen theorie en praktijk en stelt de lezer in staat zelf essentiële vragen te stellen.
