Early Sino-European Cultural Contacts

Research at the department of sinology at K.U.Leuven focuses on the following three pillars: (1) Sino-European Cultural Contacts in the 17th and 18th Centuries; (2) Classical Chinese Philosophy and its Modern Interpretations; and (3) Modern China. On this webpage, you can find more information on these pillars, as well as on current and past projects, activities, etc.

The encounter between Chinese and Europeans in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is a fascinating case of intercultural contact that still addresses questions to Chinese and European cultures today. Our research group studies this interaction from multiple perspectives, including perspectives of both transmitters and receivers, both elite and commoners. Read more.

Classical Chinese Philosophy

Modern China

This research group studies, on the one hand, philosophical topics from the pre-Qin and Han periods about regicide, abdication, benefit, paradoxes and - most recently - evolutions within the Mozi (read more). On the other hand, we look at modern interpretations of early topics, for instance the debate about the “legitimacy of Chinese philosophy”. Read more.
For this pillar, our research group focusses mainly on two themes. On the one hand,  processes of second language acquisition are studied with regard to the Chinese language (read more). On the other hand, we look at recent developments in China-Africa relations (read more).
